The Child Center and The Child & Adolescent Center are two nationally recognized treatment centers which provide a unique blend of intensive psychiatric care combined with education, experiential therapies and strong family involvement. Rogers Memorial Hospital is one of the few places in the country offering intensive cognitive-behavioral therapy for children and teens.

Peter M. Lake, MD, medical director of Rogers Memorial Hospital – Oconomowoc and Kambiz Pahlavan, MD, DFAPA, FAPA, FAACAP, medical director of Rogers Memorial Hospital – Milwaukee, are board-certified child and adolescent psychiatrists who practice full time at Rogers Memorial.

Families are an essential part of treatment. The active involvement of family members helps to ensure the successful transition back home. Staff members work with the family to anticipate issues that may arise after discharge, and then help the individual and family develop a plan that best meets the child’s continuing recovery needs.

Our treatment team also connects with school professionals, so they have an understanding of the child’s diagnosis and how it may affect school performance. In addition, the child’s primary care and outpatient providers are invited to contribute to the development of the treatment plan and coordination of continuing care services.

Prior to admission, prospective patients and their families complete a free screening that is reviewed by the program’s medical director to determine what level of care will meet the needs of each individual.

Levels of care:

There are three levels of care are available for children and adolescents:>

Residential Treatment

We offer two age-specific residential treatment centers for medically stable children with a broad range of psychiatric diagnoses and symptoms.

Patients are taught coping skills to increase self-esteem and self-responsibility. Admission is handled on a case-by-case basis. Lengths of stay are flexible.

  • The Child Center provides treatment for children ages 8 to 13.
  • The Child & Adolescent Center provides treatment for children ages 12 to 18.

Inpatient Hospitalization

Rogers Memorial offers separate and distinct psychiatric stabilization programs for children and adolescents with a wide range of mental health symptoms and diagnoses. The primary goals of inpatient hospitalization are a comprehensive diagnostic assessment, stabilization of symptoms, and transition to a less intensive level of care.

Day Treatment Services

Rogers Memorial offers a weekday treatment program with either morning or afternoon sessions at our Milwaukee, Kenosha and Brown Deer locations. The program provides coordinated care in a safe and structured setting while allowing continued involvement with family and school.

Treatment Approach:

Our treatment approach emphasizes psychiatric education and therapy through a multidisciplinary program with age-appropriate, comprehensive therapies. Our experienced, child- and adolescent-friendly staff members help children and teens understand and manage the psychosocial and environmental triggers that contribute to their behaviors.

The psychiatrists directing treatment are members of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and uphold its stated position that no medication is ever to be used without therapy. Parents are consulted in determining if medication is appropriate in conjunction with therapy.

Children and teens are given opportunities during their stay to discover their personal strengths and talents. Through group discussions and activities, each child comes to understand his or her specific mental health challenges and to learn effective way of dealing with them. The result is greater awareness, responsibility and an ability to change.

Treatment Team:

Rogers Memorial Hospital offers expert care by professionals who are experienced in dealing with child and adolescent mental health concerns. Under the direction of board-certified child and adolescent psychiatrists, each treatment team is specifically trained to work for their age group. In addition, staff members have access to clinical experts for consultation on eating disorders, OCD and anxiety disorders, chemical dependency and other behavioral health concerns readily available.

Upon admission, patients meet individually with members of their treatment team to complete a comprehensive assessment that is used to develop a personalized plan of care. During treatment, patients participate in group-based therapies and a range of experiential therapies, augmented by individual sessions with their psychiatrist, primary therapist and other members of the treatment team as needed.

Depending on the level of care, the treatment team may include: board-certified child and adolescent psychiatrist, internal medicine or family practice physician, clinical psychologist, registered nurses, master’s-level social workers/counselors, behavioral specialists, certified substance abuse counselors, registered dietitian, mental health technicians, certified teachers and school liaisons.

With patient consent, the treatment team provides ongoing written and/or oral communication regarding progress and the coordination of continuing care with the primary care and outpatient providers.
