Depression Is Topic of Morning Blend

Depression TreatmentRoger Memorial Hospital’s Dr. Rachel Leonard was a guest on TMJ4’s Morning Blend to discuss depression and how to cope with it. Trenni Kusnierek, a former TMJ4 anchor, was also a guest with Dr. Leonard to discuss her personal battle with the illness. One thing that was said to be helpful to those with depression is to discuss it with others. Trenni shared her experience of opening up about her depression and how therapeutic that was for her. When someone is open about their problems, they gain support from others suffering as well. Dr. Leonard stated the healing process can begin with openness and honesty about the issues at hand.

Depression can sometimes be difficult to recognize, especially from an outwardly appearance. The symptoms of depression include sadness, loss of interest in activities, changes in sleeping patterns, changes in appetite and hopelessness. When these symptoms begin to affect functioning in everyday life is when one should seek help. Through psychotherapy and sometimes medication, symptoms can be overcome. Although there may be stigma surrounding use of medication, both Dr. Leonard and Trenni suggest medication can be extremely helpful in decreasing the symptoms of depression. If you can find the proper medication, it doesn’t have to numb you, which is a common fear.
