Men: Don’t be afraid to reach out, says Roness

Troy RonessPeople who are looking for help with eating disorders treatment shouldn't be afraid to reach out, says Troy Roness. Troy agreed to receive treatment at Rogers Memorial Hospital following an appearance on the Dr. Phil show, and, now in recovery, he’s helping others to find the life worth living he found during his treatment. PychCentral published an interview with Troy recently considering the role of mentoring in eating disorders recovery.

When asked what it was like to be a male with an eating disorder in treatment, Troy was quick to credit Rogers’ expertise and experience with a males-only treatment program.

"I was fortunate enough to be directed to the best or most well-known institution, in my opinion, in the United States. I was privileged to have access to the best of the best in terms of health care professionals that deal specifically with males and eating disorders. However, before I found this facility, I was misdiagnosed four times by both general practitioners and internal specialists. So, stigma not only surrounds males with eating disorders themselves, but the medical community is far-behind in looking for the specific signs and symptoms in the male population."

The article was part of a series of articles on Mentoring and Eating disorders written by Shannon Cutts, who also performs as a singer and motivational speaker who shares her struggle to overcome anorexia. Shannon will be performing her "Beauty Undressed" musical program at 7 p.m. on Feb. 23, 2011 at Marquette University's Alumni Memorial Center as part of Rogers Memorial Hospital's observation of National Eating Disorders Awareness week.

Rogers was the first provider in the nation to offer exclusive treatment for men and boys with eating disorders, and is the only program in the country to offer a specialized unit for adults with co-occurring anxiety disorders.
