research presentation at ABCTBradley C. Riemann, PhD, Clinical Director of Rogers’ OCD Center and Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy Services (CBT) and David M. Jacobi, PhD, Behavior Specialist and Clinical Specialist, recently attended the annual convention hosted by the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies (ABCT) in National Harbor, Maryland. The conference had a record attendance with more than 3,000 professionals taking advantage of roundtable discussions and presentations.

“We’re excited about the collaborations that have begun from the presentations of three Rogers’ research studies,” Dr. Riemann said. As part of the convention, Dr. Riemann addressed research on: 1) how Asperger’s may or may not affect obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) outcomes; 2) how attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) may or may not affect OCD outcomes; 3) how minority participants with OCD are not seeking treatment even though the prevalence rate is the same.

“Although affected equally, fewer minorities are seeking treatment,” Dr. Riemann said. “It’s an unfortunate scenario. Even our OCD residential program is indicative of this trend; it formally established that minorities are not seeking treatment at any level of care despite a similar prevalence rate.” Future collaborations will address why and what can be done to change this outcome.

ABCT is a multidisciplinary organization committed to the advancement of scientific approaches to the understanding and improvement of human functioning through the investigation and application of behavioral, cognitive, and other evidence-based principles to the assessment, prevention, treatment of human problems, and the enhancement of health and well-being. The convention draws thought leaders and highly esteemed professionals in the industry and offers them the opportunity to discuss factors that affect disorders like OCD and how to overcome them.

eating disorder treatmentRogers’ lead dietitian, Kari Johnson, RD, CD, recently attended the annual forum hosted by the Eating Disorders Coalition of Tennessee (EDCT). “One of the key messages was that you have to learn how to accept yourself the way you are in your body,” she said. “They also addressed how important nutrition is to recovery. In fact, nutrition is the first thing that has to be replenished.” The media was also discussed in depth: “The influence media has on our nation’s young people is great, and that can be a problem because most of what we see is airbrushed. Not just the models and actors, but the food in commercials as well. It creates false expectations, giving kids an ideal they can never achieve.”
The EDCT’s 9th Annual Forum (“The Perfect Storm: Body, Brain and Cultural Influences on Eating Disorders”) offered industry professionals the opportunity for continuing education. Formed in 1999 as a task force of health professionals, EDCT educates people in Tennessee about the impact of eating disorders on the lives of individuals and their families. As a nationally respected leader in the treatment of eating disorders, Rogers Memorial Hospital exhibited information on the variety of eating disorder treatment programs offered for children, adolescents and adults.

Michael Miller, MD, FASAM, FAPA recently collaborated on an article entitled, “The Status of Physician Health Programs in Wisconsin and North Central States: A Look at Statewide and Health Systems Programs.” Discussing the increased recognition and importance of physician health, the article highlights the need to provide programs specific to helping professionals maintain their health and well-being. While most professionals thrive in demanding work environments, it is still essential to address physician health comprehensively to reduce burnout, medical errors, reduced productivity and more.

Physician health programs were developed in the late 1950’s, initially focusing on addiction in professionals. As the medical field continued to develop, these programs expanded to include overall physician health. However, it wasn’t until 2001 that a confidential process and standards were developed by the Joint Commission. As of 2011, Wisconsin was one of only 5 states nationwide without an active physician health program.

The Herrington Recovery Center at Rogers Memorial hospital is a resource providing peer support and licensure advocacy for licensed professionals. We feature a comprehensive five-day evaluation for those referred by licensure boards, regulatory agencies and other privileging organizations.
