Engaging with the hospital’s eating disorder experts on a one-on-one basis, they received a guided tour of Rogers’ 50-acre campus Oconomowoc campus. The intimate tour and conversations with medical directors and clinicians included an inside look at the services and staff involved with the Eating Disorder Center. Held at different times throughout the year, Up Close @ Rogers hosts industry professionals who come to visit and learn the scope of treatment provided at Rogers. The program also gives guests valuable insight on the advantages of the hospital’s many treatment programs, while allowing Rogers’ staff to build relationships with professionals from other organizations in the industry.

eating disorder treatmentRogers’ lead dietitian, Kari Johnson, RD, CD, recently attended the annual forum hosted by the Eating Disorders Coalition of Tennessee (EDCT). “One of the key messages was that you have to learn how to accept yourself the way you are in your body,” she said. “They also addressed how important nutrition is to recovery. In fact, nutrition is the first thing that has to be replenished.” The media was also discussed in depth: “The influence media has on our nation’s young people is great, and that can be a problem because most of what we see is airbrushed. Not just the models and actors, but the food in commercials as well. It creates false expectations, giving kids an ideal they can never achieve.”
The EDCT’s 9th Annual Forum (“The Perfect Storm: Body, Brain and Cultural Influences on Eating Disorders”) offered industry professionals the opportunity for continuing education. Formed in 1999 as a task force of health professionals, EDCT educates people in Tennessee about the impact of eating disorders on the lives of individuals and their families. As a nationally respected leader in the treatment of eating disorders, Rogers Memorial Hospital exhibited information on the variety of eating disorder treatment programs offered for children, adolescents and adults.

Michael Miller, MD, FASAM, FAPA recently collaborated on an article entitled, “The Status of Physician Health Programs in Wisconsin and North Central States: A Look at Statewide and Health Systems Programs.” Discussing the increased recognition and importance of physician health, the article highlights the need to provide programs specific to helping professionals maintain their health and well-being. While most professionals thrive in demanding work environments, it is still essential to address physician health comprehensively to reduce burnout, medical errors, reduced productivity and more.

Physician health programs were developed in the late 1950’s, initially focusing on addiction in professionals. As the medical field continued to develop, these programs expanded to include overall physician health. However, it wasn’t until 2001 that a confidential process and standards were developed by the Joint Commission. As of 2011, Wisconsin was one of only 5 states nationwide without an active physician health program.

“We shape our buildings: thereafter they shape us.” ~Sir Winston Churchill
At Rogers, a building is not just a building. It’s a physical representation of the time, effort and accomplishments our patients, families and staff gain from treatment. Our walls signify standing tall, becoming proud and confident. Brick and stone signify the strength one gets from recognizing they are not alone. Domed ceilings represent the support and connection our patients get from their entire treatment team.

Dedicated in September 2012, our new Child & Adolescent Centers were specifically designed to not only reinforce, but mimic our world class treatment. Offering a unique blend of evidence-based therapies and adventure based experiences, we strive to make our patients comfortable, all while creating a sense of community and reinforcing recovery.

This new, 33,140 square foot building brings Rogers’ two nationally recognized programs for children and adolescents under one roof. We invite you watch this video clip so you can see for yourself how our new Child & Adolescent Centers make a difference.
