Professionals Learn Details of Rogers’ AMP Efficacy Research During AACAP

Child and Adolescent PsychiatryBradley C. Riemann, PhD, Clinical Director of the OCD Center and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) Services, recently presented results of a study conducted at the Child & Adolescent Centers (CACs). Focused on the efficacy of attention modification programs (AMPs) as an effective treatment for teens with anxiety disorders, the research was presented to over 200 professionals – standing-room only – during the 59th Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP).

“It’s always our goal to enhance what we are already doing well through research,” Dr. Riemann said. “The results of this study indicate that AMP is an effective adjunctive treatment to the standard treatments of choice for anxiety disorders and may hold promise for improving treatment response in highly anxious youth. This research is cutting-edge, combining cognitive behavioral science and technology to increase our ability to treat patients.”

An AMP is a computer software program that essentially helps to retrain peoples’ attention away from their fears and reduce their symptoms. Dr. Riemann said that the research is exciting because it means therapists who have access to a computer can now provide more effective treatment – even if they are in a remote location.

“Although Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is still the treatment of choice, it’s difficult to find providers in many areas,” Dr. Riemann said. “AMPs can be effective as a standalone treatment or to enhance CBT’s results. Easy dissemination and augmented treatment are benefits of AMPs.”

The annual AACAP Conference gave professionals the opportunity to learn more about recent industry trends, including research, family-based CBT, new medications and more. AACAP is the leading national professional medical association dedicated to treating and improving the quality of life for children, adolescents and families affected by mental, behavioral and developmental disorders.
