The October 3, 2012 issue of Psychiatric Times features an article by Theodore E. Weltzin, MD, FAED, Medical Director of Eating Disorders Services, addressing the clinical characteristics and treatment of males with eating disorders. According to Dr. Weltzin, “Males conservatively make up approximately 10% of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa patients.” The article goes on to discuss high-risk groups; comorbidity; body image; excessive exercise; the combination of exercise, body image and weight loss; evaluation and treatment. Dr. Weltzin indicates that rates for eating disorders in males will probably continue to increase but says that “a growing body of evidence suggests that males respond well to treatment.” Read the article here.
