Rogers Memorial Hospital To Participate in 2013 ANAD Conference

(Oconomowoc, Wis.) Rogers Memorial Hospital is co-sponsoring the 2013 Annual Eating Disorders Conference Friday, September 27, in Naperville, Ill. Hosted by the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders, Inc. (ANAD) with the theme, “Wellness, Not Weight: Illuminating the Path to Physical, Mental & Social Well-Being,” this year’s conference features nationally known eating disorder specialists who present a myriad of specialty workshops. Topics range from athletes and parents who struggle with eating disorders to treatment using different theories like mindfulness and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT).

In addition, Brad E.R. Smith, M.D., medical director of adult inpatient eating disorder services at Rogers, will present the workshop, “Boys to Men.” Dr. Smith will review case studies, providing insights on risk factors, body dissatisfaction, rates of male eating disorders and treatment, as well as recent research about eating disorders among males. He will also discuss key updates in the fifth edition of the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), especially in regard to binge eating disorder (BED). Dr. Smith will also touch on other changes in diagnostics for anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa, as well as some reasons for the rise in eating disorders among males.

Eating disorders like anorexia, bulimia and binge eating disorder, along with co-occurring anxiety disorders, are treated successfully at Rogers’ residential Eating Disorder Center. In addition, specialized programs for women, men, teens and children are aimed at getting to the core issue of the disorder in each patient. Rogers was also the first provider in the nation to offer exclusive eating disorders treatment for men and boys and is the only program in the country to offer a specialized residential eating disorders treatment program for adults with co-occurring anxiety disorders.
