Theodore E. Weltzin, MD, FAAP, Medical Director of Rogers’ Eating Disorder Services, recently presented an educational broadcast entitled, “Surviving the holidays if you have an eating disorder.” Although intended primarily for those with eating disorders, almost anyone can glean some valuable tips from the presentation. “Holidays should be a time of year to look forward to,” Dr. Weltzin said in the broadcast, “but they are especially stressful for people with eating disorders.” He recommended having a plan, keeping a sense of humor, engaging in meaningful tasks, taking time for relaxation, and looking on the bright side. Perhaps one of the most important tips involves planning – not only in terms of when/what to eat, but also regarding how to handle various situations and to gain encouragement from support groups and loved ones. Dr. Weltzin concluded the broadcast with advice to enjoy the holidays and “worry more about the size of your heart than the size of your hips!” The webinar was featured as part of an educational series sponsored by Cigna, a global health service company.
