Michael M. Miller, MD, DFASAM, LFAPA, is the medical director of the Herrington Recovery Center at Rogers Memorial Hospital-Oconomowoc. He is a board-certified general psychiatrist and addiction psychiatrist. Dr. Miller has practiced addiction medicine for more than 30 years and is certified in addiction medicine by the American Board of Addiction Medicine.
Dr. Miller has been elected by his peers for inclusion in Best Doctors in America® from 2007 to 2016
He is a Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association (APA) and a Distinguished Fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM). Dr. Miller is also an at-large director of the American Board of Addiction Medicine (ABAM) and The ABAM Foundation. He is a past president of ASAM, the largest medical specialty society in America of physicians devoted to addiction prevention, treatment, medical education, research, and public policy.
Dr. Miller has served on many task forces and councils of ASAM and the Wisconsin Medical Society (WMS), was chair of the WMS Commission on Addictive Diseases, and is current Speaker of the WMS House of Delegates. For more than 10 years he served with Dr. Roland Herrington on the Managing Committee of the Statewide Physician Health Program of the WMS.
He serves as a faculty member for the Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship and the Addiction Medicine Fellowship at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, where he is a full professor on the clinical faculty. He also is an assistant clinical professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin where he began his residency in 1979.
Dr. Miller has lectured throughout the United States and internationally on addiction medicine, general psychiatry, and addiction psychiatry topics, as well as on topics related to medical economics, medical quality, medical ethics, and public health. In 2013, he received the ASAM Annual Award for outstanding contributions to the growth and vitality of ASAM, for thoughtful leadership in the field and for deep understanding of the art and science of addiction medicine. He was also named the national physician Clinician of the Year by Addiction Professional magazine in 2011. He served as Managing Editor for the 2013 edition of The ASAM Criteria, the most widely accepted manual of utilization management criteria for addiction care, both nationally and internationally, and he chaired the Action Group within ASAM that produced the Standards of Care for the Addiction Specialist Physician. Through his chairmanship of ASAM’s Descriptive and Diagnostic Terminology Action Group, he led the development of the groundbreaking ASAM Definition of Addiction. Through 2015, he chaired the Steering Committee of ASAM’s Practice Improvement and Performance Measurement Action Group. In June 2014, Dr. Miller was elected by the AMA House of Delegates to a four year term on the AMA Council on Science and Public Health.
