Eating Disorders Treatment Program for Males

When seeking eating disorders treatment for males, there is often the misconception that only females contend with these disorders, however the facts state otherwise. Males with eating disorders make up 10 percent of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa patients.

Rogers Memorial Hospital recognized this need when it developed the first and only eating disorders treatment for males’ residential program as part of our Eating Disorder Center in Oconomowoc, WI. Rogers’ on-site psychiatrists have unmatched experience in both the research and eating disorders treatment for males.

At Rogers, eating disorders treatment for males is a separate track from that of females, but follows the same evidence-based treatment. This includes nutritional intervention and cognitive- behavioral therapy, which helps these patients identify and challenge errors in thinking.

However, while males often have a similar response to treatment, there often are differences in the male patient’s mindset that affects the course of treatment. Eating disorders treatment for males may also include additional intervention for excessive exercise. While this can also occur in women, research shows that males with eating disorders often engage in athletic competition or activities they feel will boost their masculinity or attractiveness. Males use this dependence on exercise as a path to weight loss or to counteract the effects of eating.
