Eating Disorders Treatment for Boys Topic on NPR

NPR radio today featured a story about pre-teen boys diagnosed with eating disorders. According to the National Eating Disorder Association, an estimated 10 million men have an eating disorder, affecting boys at younger and younger ages. These boys find themselves struggling, not only from being bullied or teased, but the perception from the media that they need to be seen as muscular. The piece continued telling the story of two young men struggling with an eating disorder and the treatment that leading them to start their recovery.

“One of the biggest concerns for men seeking treatment is feeling like a fish out of water,” said Theodore E. Weltzin, MD, FAED, FAPA, medical director of eating disorders services at Rogers Memorial Hospital. “Men feel much more comfortable getting treatment around other men, who particularly have the same problem.”
