“There is something about human beings that we all have to respect. As long as human beings have existed, (they want) to be intact.
“Every journal, magazine that you open there is a section about health. There is a section that says ‘who is the better doctor’, ‘what’s the better diagnosis’, 'what's the better food about health'.
“And human beings in general, want to know about what makes them healthy. But they don’t want to get help.
“We want to be independent. Independent of any doctors.
“And sometimes– and actually it’s true– the doctor doesn’t bring the good news to you. Medicine is not entertainment. Medicine is about bringing to somebody’s attention that your heart is not ticking the way that it used to be. Your smile is not as shiny as it used to be. You frown harder than you used to. I hope I make sense.
“So, patients struggle with that sense of (loss) ‘I had that smile. I had that hardy laughter. And today I don’t have it.’ It is a big loss. I don’t blame them if they say ‘I don’t want to see you.’
“However, my task, my job, and society’s job is that, ‘yes, that was yesterday. And there is a hope for having that yesterday tomorrow. Today you don’t have it’.”
