The National Survey on Drug Use and Health, the primary source for stats on drug and alcohol abuse, found that 45 million Americans experiences some sort of mental illness in 2012. The survey cites individuals from face-to-face meetings, similar to the government census. The two part survey asks more general questions related to general mental health issues, which may or may not be related to substance abuse. Women and youth are the largest population of those affected (as many as 30%), with many having suicidal ideation. Drug and alcohol abuse was found to often go hand-in-hand with general mental illness. The study found good news as well, as many as 60% of those surveyed more people are seeking treatment more for their mental illness. This is greater than past survey results.
