Dr. Michael Miller, Medical Director of the Rogers Herrington Recovery Center, was featured on 1550 AM WHIT’s All About Living segment with Carol Koby to discuss the when the use of alcohol and drugs becomes an addiction. Throughout the program, Dr. Miller describes the definition and signs of an addiction and the way substance abuse can destroy lives when left untreated.
It is not necessarily about the ability to quit, but the ability to quit and remain that way. The discussion focuses on a quote by a patient seeking treatment for addiction. “Today I am willing to do whatever it takes to not pick up that next drug or drink.” Dr. Miller explains how the newest treatment components provide tools that can make that statement true in the addict’s everyday life. Treatment needs to remain engaged in the recovery process. Dr. Miller discusses how treatment is proven to be more successful when continuing throughout the journey of recovery, not just brief encounters with an absolute end.
The recent health reforms are also working to improve the availability of treatment for addictions. Bills that have been passed recently declare insurance companies cannot discriminate against mental health and addictions—they must be on the same level as other health concerns. This will aid in addiction treatment and will yield more positive results. Reforms could also lead to different kinds of programs/treatment for addictions. Integrating treatment into general health care rather than only offering needed treatment in residential settings is the vision of the future for those with an addiction. Help will be more readily available—mental healthcare and addiction treatment will become more mainstream.
Rogers offers several different types of progressive treatment, including programs that continue to offer support throughout the recovery process. There is individual counseling as well as group therapy, which has proved to be very successful in treating addictions. Rogers also offers an Intensive Outpatient Program in Oconomowoc, West Allis and Kenosha. These programs are several days a week, for a few hours a day. The Herrington Recovery Center in Oconomowoc is a residential treatment center for addictions that includes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Enhancement Therapy, and Medication Management as well as personal therapy sessions.
